The Executive Director at the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey has charged security agencies to investigate allegations of people being prevented from registering because they could speak french.

This according to Mr. Akwetey is the only way to determine whether the allegations are true or false.

"We can only prove allegations when they are investigated and in a situation where I heard the Minister of Defence saying they should give evidence, I felt it's a two-way thing,” he told Samson Anyenini on Newsfile.

His comment follows concerns raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that some people were denied the opportunity to vote because they could respond to 'bonjour'.

According to the NDC, people (especially in the Volta Region) were driven away from various registration centres because they could answer questions in French.

But although, Mr. Akwetey agrees that the allegations (if true) is a clear violation of one's right, the best way to prove this is by conducting investigations into the matter.

“Sometimes, the person making the complaints will have evidence to give but what if there's no evidence? Since it's not an entirely isolated thing; we've heard reports over time, I think the agencies of state must also be up and doing and investigate it. They can then dismiss it when they don't find any evidence," he said.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission completed the voters' registration exercise it began on June 30, to provide a "credible voters' register" for the country on Wednesday.

The Commission however has begun a mop-up exercise which will end on Sunday for persons who could not have their names captured in the six-phased event.
