The department of Physiotherapy and Sports Science (PSS) in Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has made history by developing the rulebook for ‘Ampe’ to become a recognized sport globally.
On Friday 27th February, 2026 at G02 - PSS laboratory - history was born.
It was the introduction of the rulebook for ‘Ampe’ to the students in the department.
Under the leadership of Professor Omoniyi Monday Moses, the head of department among others like a software developer Mr. Emmanuel Amankrah and clinical rehab and exercise specialist Mr. Prince Abraham De-Gualle Deku, after 5yrs of research have been able to publish the rulebook.

The game will include two teams of 15 players each with each player in a numbered box.
Referees called "Amfre", will penalise players who step into unauthorized boxes and officiate the game of play which happens in box number 1 of each team.
When a starter from Team A loses a jump against the opponent from Team B, he or she moves towards the right all the way to the last box numbered 15.
When the starter of Team A finally gets to box number 1 and Team B's starter hasn't yet reached number 1, it means Team A loses the first round. There will be 5 rounds in a game. Teams will be called "Opa" and "Oshe" after coin toss to begin the game.
On Friday, 6th March at the Royal Parade Grounds and Paa Joe Stadium at KNUST, ‘Ampe’ will be showcased to the entire KNUST student community as part of the 10year celebration in honor of Prof Moses as head of department for PSS.
"Have you seen two people playing ‘Ampe’ and frowning their face? No. It’s because research surprised me as to the physiological and psychological benefits of AMPE,” Prof Moses told Focus FM sports.
"The chain of reaction into development of the economy of huge.
"The ultimate aim is to see ‘Ampe’ sport at the Olympic Games" Prof Moses concluded.
The main official of the ‘Ampe’ sport, Mr. Prince Abraham Deku says that in the 5yrs of research, the collective effort of the entire students as well as staff in the department has helped in making trials and errors into developing the sport.
He also stated that the vision is to take ‘Ampe’ from GUSA, to national level and international level and added that the rate of employment for students studying Exercise and Sports Therapy in KNUST will be enormous.
