Arsenal won the Community Shield on penalties, with Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois missing in the shootout, following a 1-1 draw in normal time at Wembley.
Chelsea began without Diego Costa, Nemanja Matic and John Terry, and with none of their new signings in the starting XI. Alexandre Lacazette started for Arsenal and hit the post with the best chance of the half, with Sead Kolasinac making a first-half start when he replaced Per Mertesacker, who received an accidental elbow to the face from Gary Cahill.
In the second half, Victor Moses put Chelsea ahead within seconds of the restart with a finish from close range.
With 10 minutes left, Pedro was surprisingly sent off for a hack at Mohamed Elneny, and from the free-kick, Kolasinac could head in unmarked.
Olivier Giroud won it for Arsenal, blasting a penalty down the middle in the new ABBA shootout format, after Alvaro Morata and Courtois missed for Chelsea.
