Governance think-tank, Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has petitioned the International Criminal Court in The Hague to investigate the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the death of former Abuakwa North MP, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu.
The foundation of this request, according to ASEPA is a confession of the main suspect, Daniel Asiedu in court, where he claimed to have been contracted by key members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
ASEPA says instead of Ghana’s High Court investigating the claims, the suspect was rather referred to a psychiatrist for mental examination.
But the group in its petition said after the suspect took to social media to again, give details of the crime he committed, and mentioned President Akufo-Addo – then flagbearer - for being behind the “contract”, the president should be investigated.
“We are also petitioning your high office to open a criminal investigation against the sitting President of the Republic of Ghana on the grounds of political assassination and murder,” the request stated.
Another person the group wants investigated over the murder is Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.
According to ASEPA, the MP should be probed for “political murder, aiding and abetting and an accessory to the murder of the late Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu.”

The late Danquah-Adu was murdered in his residence at Shiashie, near Accra, on February 9, 2016.
It is the case of the prosecution that Asiedu and Bosso planned to go on a robbery spree but Bosso decided not to engage in the robbery again and went home.
Asiedu, the prosecution, said went to Shiashie and picked the MP’s house as if to rob.
The prosecution further said in the course of searching for items to steal, Asiedu made noise which woke up the MP.
According to the prosecution, a struggle ensued leading to Asiedu stabbing the MP in neck and chest, killing him in the process.
