The Association of Road Contractors (ASROC) has refuted claims by the Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Nii Quaye Kumah that there is a shortage of bitumen in the country saying there is enough bitumen on the market.According to the National Chairman of ASROC, Mr. Twumasi Mensah, bitumen became scarce about a month ago due to the heightened political tension in Ivory Coast but now the product is available in large quantities. He told Adom Business News that the product is supplied by Shell Ghana which imports it from Ivory Coast to Ghana for the contractors to buy adding that now that tensions have calmed in Cote D’Ivoire, the company has been giving them regular supplies.Apart from Ivory Coast, supplies also come in from Europe and South Africa.Meanwhile, a bitumen distributor who spoke to Adom Business News on a condition of anonymity also attested to the fact that there is no shortage and challenged the Minister to substantiate his statements.According to him prices of bitumen are pegged alongside that of crude oil since it’s a by-product of crude oil distillation.Currently, a kilogram of bitumen is sold between 1.8 and 2 Ghana cedis.Story: Afia Akyere/Adom News/Ghana
