Conflict resolution and mediation specialist Emmanuel Bombande has warned that the recent terrorist attack on Ghanaian traders in Titao, Burkina Faso, underscores the urgent need for West African countries to fight terrorism collectively rather than individually.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, Mr Bombande said the tragic incident, which left seven Ghanaians dead and several others injured, should serve as a wake-up call for regional leaders to strengthen collaboration and shared responsibility in combating extremist violence.
“At this point, no country can fight terrorism alone. We must stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our neighbours to protect our people and secure our borders,” he said.
He pointed out that while Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have made significant investments in military preparedness, training, and equipment, these efforts alone have not been sufficient to prevent attacks.
“Even with high levels of response and resources, terrorist incidents continue. This shows that prevention goes beyond military preparedness — it requires political commitment and regional cooperation,” he added.
The expert also warned that continued reliance on isolated national responses risks leaving communities vulnerable, not just in Burkina Faso and Ghana, but across the region.
He urged West African leaders to set aside political differences and adopt a united, strategic approach to combating terrorism.
“Collaboration and cooperation cannot be substitutes for our collective effort — they must complement it. Otherwise, we will continue to see these tragic incidents,” he cautioned.
