Pupils of government schools in the Amenfi East District are being forced to pay for the services of an external examination body, to the chagrin of parents.
A letter signed by the Amenfi East District Director of Education, Alexis Matipah Nkakou to all heads of schools in the district ordered that primary school pupils pay Ghc4.00 each while junior high school students are to pay Ghc5.00 each.
The letter directs that all payments be made into an account in the name of the Director Alexis Matipah Nkakou by 29 February, 2016.
It has been stated in the letter that out of the Ghc4.00 and 5.00, commission of 0.50p and Ghc1.00 respectively, will be given to the various schools as compensation to teachers who will mark the scripts.
Mr Nkakou indicated on Adom FM’s Morning Show 'Dwaso Nsem' that the District Education Directorate contracted the services of an external examination body to force teachers in the district to teach all topics in the GES syllabi.
He alleged that the teachers are unable to teach certain topics in the GES syllabi because they are not conversant with them.
The external examination body is expected to set examination questions to cover all topics in the syllabi for the pupils and students in the district.
This, according to him, will compel teachers to teach all topics in the GES syllabi.
He added that the Ghc1.00 and 0.50p compensation to the teachers is for marking the scripts although they did not set the exams questions.
He admitted the regional and national levels of the Ghana Education Service are not aware of the innovation.
Meanwhile, teachers in the district have expressed disappointment in the District Education Director for suggesting they are incompetent.
They have also opposed the idea of an external examination body setting examination questions for their pupils and students.
Listen to the District Director of Education justify the levy.
