What a week! So much has happened in rapid succession, it’s difficult to organise things into coherent thought. But it’s Friday morning, and organise we must, so… here goes.
It all started on Monday when the Supreme Court ruled on the case brought before them by the Electoral Commission, seeking to quash a high Court ruling that gave the PPP’s Dr Nduom and chance to get on the ballot after the EC disqualified him for errors on his nomination form.
They determined – for the umpteenth time in a row – that the Electoral Commission’s understanding of their own law was wrong. Funny how that keeps happening in spite of the fact that the commission’s new chairperson happens to be a lawyer, isn’t it?
So anyway, the highest court in the land ordered the EC to give all potential nominees the opportunity to re-apply within 24 hours. There was joy all around. All the disqualified candidates turned up at the EC with smiles, ready to fix those pesky little errors and move on with their lives.
Dr Nduom’s PPP for example, turned up expecting to fix the two errors the EC disqualified them for. So imagine their amazement when, after making them wait for almost 5 hours, the EC then informed them that there were actually 105 errors, and not 2. Same with all the others - the APC were told they actually had 95 errors to correct. The NDP were hit with 33, and poor old PNC were told they had over 300 errors to fix in 24 hours. Nduom, Mahama and Rawlings pulled it off. Ayariga did not.
So the deadline came, and the EC promptly announced the names of those who had made it onto the ballot, and (just in case anyone whose name rhymes with Schmayariga thought they might want to have an injunction placed on it) immediately held the draw to determine which positions each candidate would occupy on the ballot paper.
Come and see! The guy bore! In a GhOne interview, he went nuclear, calling the EC Chair “a disgrace to womanhood”. In a quip that would rival Shakespeare for its sheer poetic flamboyance, the man with two doctorates of equally dubious provenance said, and I shamefully quote, “That woman is not a woman”.
Yes. This man also would have run for President, and some Ghanaians would have voted for him.
You know, voters are interesting people. If you don’t believe me, ask Hillary Clinton. Until Wednesday morning, everyone believed Mrs Clinton was the next President of the United States. Even Donald Trump believed it. But as the numbers started pouring in, it became clear that the American voter wanted a different kind of leadership. A rude, tax-dodging, Women-insulting, Mexican-deporting, Muslim-hating, Russia-loving, Korea-bombing, P*ssy-grabbing kind of leadership. And boy, did they get it. From January 2017, the leader of the free world will be a reality show star. Anything can happen.
Although I must say, my personal highlight of the week was our interview with Mrs Samira Bawumia, wife of NPP’s Econs Boffin of a running mate, Dr Bawumia. What a delight she has turned out to be! Smart as a whip, and full of quotable quotes, the woman who hopes to become “Second Lady” (I still maintain there is no such official position), charmed her way through an hour-long interview, graciously side-stepping all the sneakily gift-wrapped landmines I attempted to pepper the field of our conversation with. For a woman who graduated top of her class at GIMPA with a Masters’ Degree in Project Management, this was no surprise, but for a Muslim Housewife whose traditional Muslim husband may or may not be comfortable with the spotlight that has suddenly framed his hitherto not-so-seen spouse, Samira was a revelation. Whatever happens in December, we all need to keep an eye on that one.
And whatever happens today, you need to stay tuned to the Super Morning show this Fantastic Friday morning as we bring you the most scintillating show of the week. Woyome, Ayariga, Charlotte Osei all come together in a salad that will set your earbuds aflame and feed your hungry mind with just the right blend or neural nourishment to set you up for a wonderful weekend. Stay with us for the best breakfast in town.
My name is Kojo Yankson, and it’s been a week of Ayariga Anger, Bawumia Brains and Clinton Crashes
GOOD MORNING, GHANAFO!
