Former Sekondi MP and ex-Minister Andrew Egyapa Mercer has insisted that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s popularity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) remains robust, following his victory in the January 31 presidential primary.
“For me, it was a foregone conclusion. The delegates had hope in the former Vice President’s candidature, and there was no doubt that he was going to win. The data showed us clearly.”
He rejected suggestions that a slight decline in votes compared to the 2023 primary indicates waning support.
“I have heard some people saying that because there was a drop in the votes that he had in the 2023 presidential primaries shows that there is some lack of support, but I completely disagree,” he said.
Mercer explained the difference by pointing out the increased competitiveness of the 2026 primary. “Every election is different. The previous election in 2023 was a two-horse race, but this time it was a three-horse race because Dr Bryan Acheampong was a force,” he said.
Mercer spoke on Metro TV on Tuesday, February 3.
He added that Dr Bawumia’s performance reaffirms his standing within the party and reinforces delegates’ confidence in his leadership ahead of the 2028 general elections.
