Some remand prisoners who are beneficiaries of the Justice for All programme are still languishing in the Ho Central Prisons because they are unable to secure release warrants from the courts.

The programme is one of the innovative interventions to decongest the prisons but as correspondent Mawuli Yevu-Agbi reports, the prisoners are still in jail because they failed to meet their bail conditions.

About 75 prisoners benefitted from the programme but not all have been able to gain partial freedom.

They were granted bail pending the conclusion of the cases for which they were arrested.

Although their bail conditions have been amended after the Justice for All programme intervention, the remand prisoners have not been able to meet the conditions.

Some of the remand prisoners now need two sureties and some amount of money in some cases a ₵1,000 to meet the bail conditions.

Short of that “there is no way we can release them” deputy director of prisons Victor Agbelengor told Joy News. He said the stranded inmates will go home immediately their release warrants are signed by the court.

The Ho Central Prisons meant to house 150 prisoners hold 450 inmates.
