Ghana’s under 17 team, the Black Starlets, produced a swashbuckling display of football as they began their African Cup of Nations with a 4-0 win over Cameroon.
The Starlets served a good recipe of revenge for Ghana and the Black Stars in particular who lost in the same country four months earlier to the Indomitable Lions.
Paa Kwasi Fabin and his charges took control of the game after a physical opening minutes dominating territorially and in possession. The team were a delight on and off the ball with players in perpetual motion offering team mates passing options time and again.
Captain Eric Ayiah, who was nominated for African Young Player of the year, led by example and gave the Starlets the lead latching on to Najeeb Yakubu’s cross at the near post. His strike partner, Ibrahim Sulley doubled the lead a few minutes later.
Sulley completed his brace with a defty executed finish lobbing the ball over Cameroon keeper Boris Junior Essele
Ayiah completed the rout volleying home in what was a drab second half comparatively.
Next up for the Starlets is a game against Gabon who lost 5-1 to Guinea. Victory over the hosts could see Paa Kwasi Fabin’s men get closer to their objective of reaching the semifinal and automatically qualifying for the World Cup.
