The Boards of Governors of 25 Senior High Schools (SHS) in the Northern Region were on Wednesday inaugurated and charged to ensure the judicious use of resources for the schools’ development.
Each school has a board membership of 13 people with the head of the institution as the Chairman. In all 325 members were inaugurated for the 25 SHSs.
Mrs. Elizabeth De-Souza, Northern Regional Director of Education, inaugurating the Boards admonished, “Make sure money that is advanced to the institutions, whether from the government, private groups or individuals is used for what they are intended for”.
She reminded the heads of the institutions of the challenges some of them faced at the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee sittings in Tamale this year regarding their financial transactions and urged them to improve upon their performances.
The Regional Director urged the Boards of the institutions to support Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the schools and also use funds meant for it to promote its teaching and learning.
She noted that the parcels of land belonging to educational institutions were currently under threat from land encroachers and developers and therefore urged the school boards to secure the boarders and layouts of the institutions.
Mrs De-Souza also entreated the Boards to revive the concept of school farms so that the schools could cultivate some vegetables to enrich their diets.
She said the inauguration of the School Boards represented a step forward in ensuring the delivery of quality education in the region.
