Country Manager for Brussels Air has called for more female mentors in the aviation industry to encourage more women into the seemingly male-dominated sector.
Rita Macedo made the call as the airline welcomed an all-female crew at the Kotoka International Airport to commemorate International Women’s Day.
“Here at Brussels air most of our staff are women already. Brussels air has 10 percent of our cockpit crew being women.
Although it is small, it is one of the highest in the industry. What I think we need is to have more female role models so that more women will see and be attracted,” she said.
The flight SN289 with a 100% female crew took the flight to Abidjan and to Accra, where both the Brussels Airlines Country Manager and Station Manager are women.
The cockpit was manned by Captain Daniela and First Officer Marie. The plane also had an all-female service in the cabin.
With this symbolic flight, the airline wants to help strive for a more gender-inclusive world-also in Africa.
With female co-workers on all levels and in every department, including HR, Marketing, Ground Operations, Aircraft Maintenance, Cabin Crew and support services, the majority of Brussels Airlines’ workforce is female (51.6%).
At 10%, the airline’s percentage of female pilots is one of the highest in the aviation industry, where the global average is just over 3%.
As from -1 April, the airline will also have a female CEO Christina Foerster – the first ever woman to head a Lufthansa Group airline.
Brussels Airlines was founded in 2002 and is 100% owned by Deutsche Lufthansa AG.
