A businessman accused of defrauding a woman of GH¢500,000 in a gold transaction has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.
Charles Yao Anyomi is alleged to have collected the money under the pretext of securing the complainant 5kg of gold, but did not deliver.
Charged with defrauding by false pretences, Anyomi pleaded not guilty.
The court, presided over by Mrs Susana Eduful, has admitted Anyomi to bail in the sum of GH¢600,000 with two sureties to be justified with title deeds in the name of the sureties.
It directed that the original document of the titled deed should be deposited at the Court’s registry.
The case has been adjourned to September 13, 2025.
Prosecution’s facts are that the complainant (name withheld) is a businesswoman residing at Madina, a suburb of Accra, while the accused is also a businessman and a resident at Spintex, Accra.
In December 2024, the complainant and the accused took a trip to South Africa.
Prosecution said that while the complainant was in South Africa, she had a call from her husband, who was on a business trip to Dubai to sell his gold.
As she was talking to her husband, the accused overheard their conversation concerning gold.
Anyomi then informed the complainant that if she could give him GHC500,000, he would be able to supply 5kg of gold to her.
Relying on this false representation, the prosecution said the complainant informed her husband, and together they transferred the said amount to the accused person’s Stanbic Bank account, mobile money account, as well as giving him cash.
After Anyomi had received the money, he ceased all forms of communication with the complainant and went into hiding.
The complainant later got alarmed and reported the case to the police for investigation.
Subsequently, Anyomi was arrested, and in his investigation caution statement, he admitted receiving the money but claimed to have handed it to one Charles.
Prosecution said Anyomi, however, was unable to lead the police to arrest the said Charles.
