The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has called on government to expedite processes to complete the ongoing stakeholder consultations on the National Ageing Bill.
Commemorating the 2020 International Day of Older Persons, the Commissioner, Joseph Whittal noted that the aged form a greater part of the vulnerable in the country, thus, the passage of the Bill would give them the needed protection.
"While we await passage of the National Ageing Bill into law, the Commission further calls on the State to do more to uphold the rights of older persons within the meaning of the NAP, the constitution and international instruments."
Speaking about this years' theme: "Pandemics: Do They Change How we Address Age and Ageing?", he urged the government to pay more attention to the health and social state of the aged in the country.
He noted that the Covid-19 pandemic revealed to the world including Ghana that the aged need special healthcare, as such, more needs to be done to address the issue.
"Increase awareness and appreciation of the role of health care workforce in maintaining and improving the health of older persons with special attention to the nursing profession; and also increase understanding of the impact of Covid-19 on older persons, which calls for deliberate healthcare policy and service delivery interventions so as to minimize the effects of this and future pandemics on older persons."
The Commissioner also urged the citizenry to desist from discriminatory acts against the aged and instead show compassion and love for them.
