The Civil Society Platform on Oil and Gas is drawing attention to the need for the laws on environment to be respected before full scale operations begin on phase 2 of the Jubilee project.
The group maintains that the Environmental Impact Assessment for the first phase of the Jubilee project was fraught with weaknesses for which a permit should not have been issued.
These were contained in a communique issued by the platform and signed by Dr. Steve Manteaw after a meeting to review Natural Resources and the Environment.
The Civil Society Campaign group argues that phase 1 of the Jubilee project had too many shortcomings. It cited misclassification of the project, weak emphasis on the social dimensions of impacts, the absence of an assessment of oil spills and the dumping of drilling wastes in the sea as part of the hazards Jubilee phase 1 had on the environment.
The platform is also worried that the FPSO in use is a converted second-hand single hulled tanker which is very weak and increasingly out of use. According to the group, classification carried out on half of the FPSO by Bureau Veritas revealed that the FPSO’s made out of converted oil tankers are unsuitable to serve as oil production and storage platforms.
The platform also wants full disclosure on the status of strategic environmental and social impact assessment started by the Environmental Protection Agency a year ago.
