Deputy Ranking Member on the Local Government Committee of Parliament, Benjamin Kpodo, has condemned the attack on a Police officer by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Sekondi-Takoradi.
Speaking in an interview on the Super Morning Show on Friday, Mr. Kpodo aid the MCE's conduct is reprehensible if what has been reported in the media is exactly what transpired.
He argued that the MCE as the head of the Municipal Security Council (MCE) should have explored other alternatives instead of dealing with the Police officer in the manner in which he did.
"Even in an ordinary civilian office, the head of any unit should not go down so low and because the MCE is the Chief Executive of the Assembly, he is the head of the MUSEC - the policeman operates in his area as a subordinate- so he cannot go down so low.
"He should have invited the policeman on duty to his office or reported him to a superior officer to take action but if what we have heard is true then it is reprehensible, we cannot vouch for any such behavior," he said. Nonetheless, he called for the incident to be critically analysed before any action is taken against him.
"It is true that some measures must be taken against him but we need to also hear his side of the story," he said.
The MCE has been charged on three counts of Assault of a public officer, offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace, and disturbing the peace in a public place contrary to Sections 205, 207, and 298, respectively, of the Criminal and Other Offences Act of 1960, Act 29.
The Command said he has also been charged for dangerous driving contrary to Section 1 of Act 683 of 2004 as amended by Act 761 of 2008.
He was further dragged to court to respond to the charges leveled against him and was granted bail. In the latest development, he has been suspended by the government.
In a press statement issued on Friday, the Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Mr. Dan Botwe stated that: “On the instructions of the President, the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Sekondi-Takoradi Assembly, Mr. Abdul Mumin Issah has been suspended from office with immediate effect pending an inquiry into his encounter with the Police on February 3, 2022.”
