A group of corporate society members and students from various universities have made a monetary donation to support traders whose businesses have been affected across coastal towns in Accra.

The sum of ¢13,040 is intended to serve as capital for these traders whose source of livelihood has been affected due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and its accompanying developments.

Led by Agribusiness Consultant at IESO agribusiness consult, Steven Odarteifio, the team presented the sum at the Osu Mantse’s palace.

He recounted how the idea was birthed while he and his sister deliberated on what to get as a Mother's Day present for their mum.

“It occurred to me that we have never done anything for mothers who don’t have the kind of privilege some of our mothers were afforded when they were growing up.”

“It is an honour to be part of anything that will contribute to the development of our people,” Steven said.

The sum was raised within three days through contributions from a wide network of friends and colleagues who supported the cause.

He noted that this is the start of similar donations that will be geared towards other traders in the region.

According to the group, recipients who use the money for the intended purpose will be eligible to access more capital for their business in the future.

One of the women present at the event, Mercy Tetteh, prayed for the team while appreciating their consideration at a time where their finances were almost in shambles.

So far, 20 mothers have received ¢5000 worth of cash while the remaining ¢8000 will be disbursed in tranches during the week.

They include fishmongers and those who sell food items like bread, 'kenkey', 'Hausa Koko' (porridge) fruits alongside other staple foods.

Responding to the kind gesture, Nii Nortey Adumuah IV Osiahene, thanked the donors immensely hoping for subsequent partnerships.

“We thank you and really appreciate this love you have shown to us. We hope that we continue to have a very fruitful relationship and at any time at all we can communicate whether about this or anything at all,” he said.

Some contributors to this donation are the Special Assistant to the Osu Mantse, Professor Bernard Nii Nortey Botchway, some corporate society employees and students in the University of Ghana and other institutions abroad.

Meanwhile, a monitoring team has been set up to track the progress of each beneficiary.
