A Koforidua high court has issued an injunction on Electoral Commission restraining it from re-running the disputed Akwatia constituency polls. The injunction followed an application by National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for the constituency, Baba Jamal, and two independent candidates. The constituency polls on December 7 ended in rancour when some unidentified machomen were said to have invaded some polling stations to seize ballot boxes and in the process spilled the ballots, rending the process inconclusive. Akwatia remains one of only two constituencies across the country with no elected parliamentarians because the results have not been declared. The other constituency in dispute is Asutifi South in the Brong Ahafo region. The EC, after the poll, announced it would run the Akwatia polls again but in six polling stations where it was thought the process was truncated, however the petitioning group asked it to run the entire constituency.Their petition to the EC fell on deaf ears, and according to Jamal, going to court remained the only option. They therefore went to court to stop the Electoral Commission from running the poll in only six constituencies and also from declaring anyone the winner of the constituency polls. The court upheld the application and has fixed January 19.
