‘Critics of Alhaji Jawula can go to court’

The spokesman for the Chief Director at the Ministry of Health, Mohammed Awal says those who think Alhaji M.N.D. Jawula acted inappropriately by wearing an NPP shirt at the party’s Kasoa rally should go to court. He said the criticisms over his boss’ attempt to seek political office were misplaced. Mr. Awal was responding to concerns that Alhaji Jawula violated the Civil Servants Code which bars civil servants from publicly declaring support for a particular political party. Alhaji Jawula who is tipped for the vice presidential slot of the NPP was reportedly spotted at the NPP rally wearing party colours. The former Ghana Football Association Chairman who is also a chief (Lepo Wura) has also been criticized for violating Article 94 of the 1992 Constitution which also bars chiefs from partisan politics. But Mr. Awal says Alhaji Jawula has not committed any offence since the Constitution is silent on the issue of civil servants seeking political office. He told Joy News that there were many examples where civil servants sought political while in office, citing one Opoku Manu who was also a Chief Director at the Finance Ministry. The Legal Officer of the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Mr. Kojo Asante however disagreed with him. He told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Host, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah that the Civil Servants Code and the Political Parties Act are not inconsistent with the 1992 Constitution. According to him “you cannot engage in canvassing support for a political party or a candidate who is standing for public elections”. That he said is different from saying that one is not eligible to stand as a member of parliament if you are holding a certain public office. Story by Malik Abass Daabu
