The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Mayor has inspected the Makola Mall Phase 2 Construction site to determine if the safety measures agreed with the contractors have been implemented.
New safety measures had been done to protect human lives following an accident at the Makola Mall Phase 2 Construction site which led to the death of a hawker.
The deceased was hit by an item that tumbled from the top floor of the construction site.
The city authorities stopped all ongoing construction and shut the site.
In a statement released Tuesday, May 31, signed by PRO of the AMA, Numo Blafo III, it said, "the AMA wishes to inform the general public who use that area to and from for their usual businesses to exercise some care and follow the instructions and signals that have been placed there."
The Assembly hopes that everyone will cooperate with the security personnel on hand who will be redirecting pedestrians and to ensure that no hawking activities are conducted around the periphery of the construction site.

ENHANCED SAFETY PRECAUTIONS UNDERTAKEN BY MAKOLA MARKET COMPANYӬ
Following an accident at the Makola Mall Phase 2 Construction which led to the demise of a hawker, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) stopped all ongoing construction works at the site and the place was closed down.
In view of this, the AMA, management of the Makola Market Company Limited and the contractor of the project met on May 26, 2016, to discuss the safety measures that the contractor will put in place to avoid the recurrence of such an unfortunate accident.
The meeting agreed on the following established measures for implementation:
- Employment of Site Safety Officer to oversee general safety of the site Ӭ
- Posting of extra warning notices/signals around the general construction site; Ӭ
- Deployment of personnel of newly-engaged security company to provide Ӭassistance to members of public on safety issues around the construction site. Their work schedule includes but not limited to the following:Ӭ 3.1. Physical on-site visibility to serve as a first-line deterrent/check to Ӭunauthorized approach/access by unauthorized person/s Ӭ
3.2. Direct person/s who unwittingly trespass on the limits of the construction site by politely showing them alternative routes
3.3. Remedy or cause to be remedied any weaknesses/defects/unauthorized changes found in the physical barriers placed around the site
3.4. Politely evict or cause to be evicted any unauthorized person/s who attempts to settle for any reason, commercial or non-commercial, within the zones of exclusion as indicated by warning notices and/or signals expressly placed around the site;
- Provision of covered walkway within the walk zones defined by the pedestrian right-of-way to protect general public from any accidental falling objects; Ӭ
- Provision of extra layer of safety netting around the general construction site; Ӭ
- Enhancement of safety awareness of all site workers through daily drills and Ӭchecks; Ӭ
- Provision of extra Personal Protection Equipment to all workers on site Ӭ
On Monday, May 30, 2016, the AMA team led by the Hon. Mayor inspected the site to ascertain the fulfillment of the above safety measures and was satisfied by all that had been done to protect human lives.
The AMA wishes to inform the general public who use that area to and from for their usual businesses to exercise some care and follow the instructions and signals that have been placed there.
Finally, it is the hope of the Assembly that everyone will cooperate with the security personnel on hand who will be redirecting pedestrians and ensure that no hawking activities are conducted around the periphery of the construction site.
