Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has announced a developing collaboration between the Defence Ministry and Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, aimed at advancing peace, security, and social cohesion within Ghana and across the wider Sahel region.
The discussions, held at The Square on Monday, were described by Dr Boamah as “fruitful and progressive.”
The visiting delegation, led by Fr. Michael Quaicoe, Director of Governance, Justice and Peace for the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, proposed the collaboration under the broader Sahel Peace Initiative (SPI), a regional programme designed to strengthen peace and stability across West Africa’s Sahel belt.
“We explored how the Ministry and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference can work together as part of our ongoing efforts towards national and regional stability,” Dr Boamah stated.
Fr. Quaicoe highlighted the Catholic Church’s unwavering commitment to promoting peace and justice through structural support and partnerships.
“The Church is committed to providing systems and structures that contribute to both internal and external security through collaboration,” he said, adding that the SPI seeks to generate partnerships and foster common interest in peacebuilding.
Dr Boamah affirmed the Ministry’s readiness to work with religious institutions to strengthen Ghana’s defence posture and contribute meaningfully to regional peacebuilding efforts.
“The Ministry welcomes initiatives that build bridges for peace. Working with faith-based organisations like the Catholic Bishops’ Conference is a strategic move in our broader national security approach,” he concluded.
