Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics will square off for the 2025 Democracy Cup on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The match, which will be the second edition of the off-season game was launched on Thursday by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

It is designed to celebrate Ghana’s democratic journey while showcasing the passion of local football rivalries.
This year’s contest, sponsored by KGL carries added significance, as the winner will qualify for a three-team international tournament in May 2026, providing an opportunity to showcase Ghanaian football on a global platform.
The inaugural edition, held on July 17, 2024, saw Kumasi Asante Kotoko defeat Hearts of Oak 2-1 in a memorable final. Hearts, eager to bounce back from that setback, are determined to make a statement, while Great Olympics are poised to seize the chance to outshine their rivals.
Speaking at the launch, Speaker Bagbin highlighted the event’s role in uniting Ghanaians.
“You cannot get peace without competition. You cannot get happiness without competition. You cannot get peace without unity, you cannot get happiness without unity,” he remarked.
“The launch of this second edition is a powerful testament to what we can achieve as a nation when we commit to a shared vision and work together with purpose.”
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga echoed the sentiment, describing the match as “a titanic clash between two giants of Ghana football” while emphasising its broader value to democracy.
Sammi Awuku, representing the Minority Leader, added that the fixture represents “democracy, unity, and national spirit all rolled into 90 minutes on the pitch,” urging fans to rally behind both teams.
The Executive Chairman of KGL Group,Alex Apau Dadey, reiterated the company’s commitment to national unity and development.
“The KGL Group of Companies remains deeply committed to working alongside national institutions in building a future that is just, united, and full of possibilities for every Ghanaian. Entrepreneurship without philanthropy doesn’t mean anything,” he said.
The launch was graced by the GFA President, Kurt Okraku and he assured fans of an exciting spectacle, noting that both clubs are “battle-ready” and calling on them to deliver quality football that promotes unity.
Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), representing the Minister of Sports and Recreation, confirmed that the Accra Sports Stadium pitch would be in top condition for the contest, while teasing fans with the question: “Will it be repeat or revenge?”—a reference to Hearts’ loss to Kotoko in last year’s final.
The Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer A. Djietror, described the Democracy Cup as “more than a football match,” positioning it as a legacy project to deepen democratic engagement, foster unity, and elevate the event to a regional and continental symbol of cohesion.
The match will be preceded by a curtain-raiser between a Parliamentary XI, captained by former Black Stars midfielder Agyemang Badu, and a Judiciary XI led by ex-Black Stars defender John Mensah, with both sides featuring five former national players. The event will also feature giveaways, a Man of the Match award, and raffle prizes for fans, adding to the festival-like atmosphere.
