Builsa South MP, Dr. Clement Apaak has faulted President Akufo-Addo's directive to the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate some ‘galamsey’ claims by former Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.
Speaking to JoyNews, Dr. Apaak argued that the referral by the President is simply an attempt to shield the truth from coming out.
“I worry that this call for the CID to conduct this investigation could be a plot to clear yet again, persons in government from wrongdoing,” he stated.
In an interview with state broadcaster GBC that has since gone viral, Professor Frimpong-Boateng claimed there are New Patriotic Party and Jubilee House officials who are neck-deep in the ‘galamsey’ menace who connived to force him out as Minister.
On the back of this revelation, President Akufo-Addo has tasked the Police to investigate the allegations.
But the legislator finds the directive odd. According to him, an independent body should be given that task, proposing the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) or the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).
This he said, is because the allegation clearly indicts the president, government and officials of the NPP so a state agency should not be entrusted with the investigation.
He further stated that there have been instances from the past six to seven years where “agencies under the direct supervision of the Executive have conducted investigations or are even in the process of conducting investigations for the President himself to make pronouncements clearing his appointees who are alleged to have engaged in wrongdoing.”
Meanwhile, the Buem MP, Kofi Adams insists a public inquiry undertaken by a Commission will serve the interest of truth and justice and not the Police CID.
