Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has dismissed suggestions government’s decision to ease Covid-19 restrictions was to allow the Electoral Commission to compile a new voter’s register.
According to him, the president’s move is not driven by what happens at the Electoral Commission or the National Identification Authority, but they are informed by the need to secure public health and safety..
“We are not taking decisions on politics,” he stressed on JoyNews' Beyond the Lockdown programme.
The Information Minister indicated that, inspite of the fact that the President’s regional tours and other political activities have been impacted by the pandemic, human lives matter more.

He stressed that whatever decisions taken by the government will be “backed by the science and data” and not politics.
Easing restrictions for religious activities
The Information Minister stated that the easing of the restrictions wasn’t born out of pressure from various stakeholders.
“The President is not under pressure,” he asserted.
He further explained that if religious gatherings are allowed to resume the president will expect churches to operate in controlled environment that will not put their congregants at risk.
“The president will have to walk a fine line to allow some level of activity but he is minded to ensure the numbers and environment the churches will operate is controlled to ensure people are not put at risk,” he stressed.
