The Electoral Commission has established a Queue Management System to prevent overcrowding at its registration centres particularly in the Greater Accra Metropolis.
The EC’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Sylvia Annoh in a signed statement, Monday indicated that a new management system is to ensure that registrations are carried out in two batches.
Noting that only 150 applicants will be allowed into various registration centres whilst the others will be asked to go home and return in the afternoon.
“The Commission believes that this system will go a long way to reduce the long queues and help with the enforcement of social distancing,” she stated.
The Electoral Commission commenced the compilation of the new voters’ register on Tuesday, June 30.
Seven days into the exercise, most of the safety protocols of the Covid-19 especially social distancing has been difficult to implement due to overcrowding.
This led to several calls by some Groups and the Ghana Medical Association to petition the Jean-Mensa-led EC to suspend registration exercise.
But in the statement issued, Mrs Annoh said the Commission prioritises the safety of registrants amidst the pandemic, therefore, it will take decisive steps to ensure that citizens register in a secure environment.
“We encourage constructive feedback from the general public which is aimed at improving the registration exercise which is already in motion.”
