A member of the national committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Desmond Apeku, has passionately urged local fishermen and women to throw their support behind the party in the upcoming elections.
Addressing a large gathering of fisherfolk, Apeku unveiled a groundbreaking initiative: the introduction of solar-powered outboard motors designed to revolutionize fishing operations and enhance the economic well-being of coastal communities.

Apeku did not mince words about the challenges plaguing the fishing industry, particularly the soaring cost and erratic supply of premix fuel.
"I understand the struggles you face daily. Premix fuel, which should power your boats, has become expensive and hard to come by. Many of you are forced to rely on diesel and super, both of which are not only costly but also unsustainable in the long run," he lamented.
He revealed that the government currently spends an astounding GH₵800 million annually to subsidize premix fuel, yet this effort falls short as supplies remain inconsistent, leaving fisherfolk vulnerable and financially strained.
To address these persistent challenges, Apeke announced the NPP’s plan to introduce solar-powered outboard motors—a game-changer for the fishing industry.

"These solar-powered motors will reduce your dependence on expensive fuels, lower operational costs, and provide you with a more sustainable and reliable alternative. This is not just about technology; it’s about giving you the financial independence and stability you deserve," he emphasized.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Keta, Emmanuel Gemegah, reinforced Apeku’s message, urging the fisherfolk to consider the long-term impact of their electoral choices.
"Your vote is more than just a ballot; it’s a decision about the future of your children and generations yet unborn. By voting for the NPP, you are securing a future where your livelihoods are protected and your families thrive," Gemegah stated, drawing applause from the audience.
The reaction from the fishing community was one of optimism and renewed hope. Many expressed excitement about the potential benefits of solar-powered motors, seeing them as a solution to the challenges they have faced for years.

"This is exactly what we need. The high cost of fuel has made it difficult for us to make a decent living. If this plan materializes, it will change everything for us," said one fisherman, echoing the sentiments of many others.
This initiative signifies a major step towards revitalizing the fishing industry in Keta, a vital economic hub for the region. With promises of sustainable technology and reduced costs, the NPP’s proposal has struck a chord with the community.
As the election draws near, the support of the fisherfolk could be a decisive factor, potentially shaping the future of the entire municipality’s economy.
Desmond Apeku's call to action was more than a political plea—it was a vision for a brighter, more sustainable future for Keta's fisherfolk.
As the community weighs its options, the promise of solar-powered outboard motors stands out as a beacon of hope, signalling a transformative shift that could uplift not just the fishing industry but the entire coastal region.
