Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has alleged that a political party is conspiring to produce 2.5 million counterfeit ballot papers ahead of Ghana’s general elections on December 7, 2024.
He made this revelation while speaking to JoyNews on Sunday, December 1, following an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).
According to Dr Omane Boamah, the NDC has been tracking intelligence for the past seven months that suggests plans are underway to print fake ballots. He stated that this alarming development poses a significant threat to the credibility of the electoral process and urged authorities to take decisive action to address the situation.
Dr Omane Boamah also highlighted the discovery of a defaced ballot paper in the Eastern Region, indicating that it might be part of a larger scheme requiring the scrutiny of the security features of the official ballots. He warned that this could enable the production of counterfeit ballots that closely resemble authentic ones, potentially undermining the integrity of the election.
The NDC elections chief called on stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission and security agencies, to act swiftly to prevent any attempts to compromise the democratic process.
He emphasised the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s electoral integrity to ensure the will of the people prevails."
“We have been tracking a particular intel for about 7 months now that a particular political party seeks to print about 2.5 million ballot papers illegally. So, could it be that with this single ballot, they wanted to know the identity and the security features of the ballot so that they could mimic it and escape detection during ballot sorting on December 7."
“At a point that political party was even contemplating whether to go ahead or not. Eventually, they decided to go ahead. We are still tracking and we are confident that if they go ahead and see to the distribution, we shall effect arrest and hand them over to lawful authority,” he stated.
