Dr Maurice Ampaw, a Legal Practitioner has urged Ghanaians to grasp the opportunities offered by the novelty election petition case to overhaul its pre and post election legal processes.
Dr Ampaw, who is President of the Legal Advocacy Foundation, an Accra-based NGO, told Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview on Wednesday that the explanation of the processes and the nitty-gritty of the judgment would stop the sometimes unnecessary polemics over the case.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2012 elections, objected to the declaration of John Dramani Mahama, candidate of the National Democratic Congress as President and petitioned the Supreme Court to have the decision reversed.
The petition, which Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP lost, spanned half a year, creating a platform for views on the appropriateness of Ghana’s rules on the resolution of election disputes.
Dr Ampaw said a swifter election dispute resolution regime would serve the nation better than the current drawn-out one, which created problems of legitimacy.
He said presidential petitions in Ghana, could be heard within days, even before the rightful winner is sworn in, to give the winning candidate the leeway to operate.
Dr Ampaw lauded the Chief Justice, Georgina Wood, Justice, William Atuguba, Panel Chairman and other members of the panel for a good and verifiable work on the case.
He also commended Justice Wood for initiating moves to investigate the suggestions in the leaked conversation of Victoria Hamah, the sacked Deputy Minister of Communications, suggesting that some judges were influenced to give judgment in favour of John Mahama.
