The Energy Ministry has rejected suggestions that some oil deals entered into by the government are questionable. Mr. Kofi Adams, spokesperson for former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is reported to have asserted that Mrs Rawlings would review oil contracts entered into by the government if she becomes Ghana’s next president. But the Energy Ministry in a statement said the former first lady's spokesperson to whom the views have been attributed only sought to mislead the public. The statement said “The Ministry of Energy notes with concern a statement attributed to Mr. Kofi Adams, Spokesperson to the Rawlingses, which was published in the 14th April, 2011 edition of the Daily Guide. The statement states inter alia: ‘The former first lady and a leading contender for the NDC flagbearership race would open her eyes into several deals undertaken by the Mills' administration especially those concerning the country’s fledging oil industry…". The statement continues, “If elected, Agyeman-Rawlings will seek to prosecute corruption in the country’s oil industry…”. The statement signed by the Energy Minister, Dr Joe Oteng-Adjei said Mr. Adams’ sought to “impute corruption and therefore subjects the public sector to public ridicule. The Ministry of Energy whose core responsibility it is to ensure formulation and implementation of policy in the entire sector including oil and gas has transparent and elaborate procedures in entering into agreements and therefore wish to state categorically, all agreements entered into on behalf of the people of Ghana, have been done devoid of any corruption and in the spirit of honesty and transparency.” The Public Relations Officer of the Energy Ministry, Mr Edward Bawa told Joy News the claims should not be taken seriously. The Energy Minister however added that if “Mr. Adams or any other Ghanaian for that matter who has reason to suspect that deals entered into by the Ministry do not meet the highest standard of transparency, honesty and integrity, [they] should not hesitate to report that to the appropriate state agencies for investigation and possible prosecution.” Source: Joy News/Ghana
