Jordan Ayew's relegation from this season's Barclays Premier League season has trended worldwide for many reasons, chiefly because his storied club Aston Villa created negative history by going down.
But his colleagues from Africa, in his team, and elsewhere in the league also drew interest for not surviving the drop.
Eleven African internationals, including Ayew, were relegated as the Premiership ended at the weekend. With Villa's status confirmed last month, Newcastle United and Norwich City joined the Villains as the three clubs going down a division.
Last week Wednesday’s results saw Sunderland escape the dreaded drop thanks to a fine 3-0 win over Everton, a game in which Ivorian defender Lamine Kone scored twice.
After Sunderland’s win, their bitter rivals Newcastle United were confirmed as relegated after they could only manage a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa on the weekend.
Villa ended bottom with just 17 points from their 37 matches played. Newcastle and Norwich have 34 points from their 37 games while Sunderland are out of danger with 38 points.
The 11 Africans who couldn't make it
Aston Villa (3) – Idrissa Gana Gueye (Senegal), Jordan Ayew (Ghana), Rudy Gestede (Benin)
Norwich City (3) – Dieumerci Mbokani (DRC), Sebastien Bassong (Cameroon), Youssouf Mulumbu (DRC)
Newcastle United (5) – Papiss Cisse (Senegal), Chancel Mbemba (DRC), Cheick Tiote (Ivory Coast), Henri Saivet (Senegal), Seydou Doumbia (Ivory Coast)
