Harrison Afful’s search for a new club has ended in Tunisia after he signed a three-year contract with Esperance.
The Tunisians said on their website that they reached an agreement with Afful and Gomoa Fetteh Feyernood on Monday and will seal the deal after the player undergoes medicals on Tuesday even though they have already declared that “Afful is officially an Esperance player”.
The club said there had been difficulties in reaching an agreement initially but say his “superb performance” in a friendly against AS Megrin when he scored a goal convinced the coaching staff to sign him.
The deal will be a huge relief to Afful who until now has struggled to secure a deal outside Ghana.
Despite his stellar performances for the Black Stars for whom he has played all but one of the 2010 world cup qualifiers.
Afful has been Ghana’s regular left back since the 2008 Nations Cup but the statement on the club’s website said they are hoping he will resolve their ‘chronic problems’ on the right side of defence.
Afful played for Asante Kotoko in the second half of the Ghana season, but his temporary deal with the club expired after the season ended on Sunday.
Despite being Ghana’s first-choice left-back since the 2008 Nations Cup, the product of the Gomoa Fetteh Feyernood Academy has struggled to establish himself, returning at the end of last summer from a European merry go-round that took him through Holland and Belgium without finding a permanent deal.
He also spent a week on training at Mamalodi Sundowns but left claiming coach Hristo Stoichkov clearly did not want him.
However, he picked himself from the disappointment and played a big part as Kotoko rallied to give Hearts a hot chase for the title, while keeping his place in June when the Black Stars played back-to-back games in Mali and Sudan that has put them on the perfect footing for a place at the 2010 World Cup.
