The Food and Drugs Board (FDB) has revoked the Product Registration Licences of two Chinese companies whose activities contravene the laws of the board.
It said the two companies, Tasly Ghana Company Limited and Winalite Ghana Limited, were making false claims to the effect that food supplements could be used to treat various ailments.
The FDB said "the licenses of the two companies have been revoked to ensure the protection of the health and safety of the general public."
A Statement issued in Accra yesterday by the FDB and signed by its Chief Executive, Dr. Stephen Opuni, explained that the food supplements were registered by the FDB under the condition that, there were no therapeutic claims for treatment, prevention, mitigation and cure for disease could be made.
It said post market surveillance activities carried out by the FDB, showed a number of regulatory infringements in the activities of Tasly Ghana Limited and its distributors.
The statement said Tasly Company and its distributors were using misleading diagnostic equipments to make false diagnoses, and prescribing food supplements for the treatment of diseases such as leukemia, cancers, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, fibroid and spinal cord problems.
Others were waist pain, asthma, heart diseases, hepatitis, infertility and impotence.
It mentioned the food supplements being used by Tasly as ginseng capsules, propolis and pollen capsules, tasly mis bee syrup, royal jelly softgel capsules and cardiotonic pill.
The statement said Winalite Ghana Limited, on the other hand, was engaged in clandestine sale and distribution of love Moon Anion Sanitary Napkin to the public for the treatment of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, sleep disorders and diabetes, for which the products had not been approved by the FDB.
"The clandestine activity of the company and the deception of the public into believing that the sanitary napkins can treat certain chronic disease conditions is a threat to public health and safety," it said.
