The Director of Policy Engagement and Partnership at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante, has called for a united national front to tackle the growing threat of electoral violence.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, July 14, Dr Asante emphasised that safeguarding Ghana’s democracy cannot be left solely in the hands of politicians.
“I am really calling on citizens across the country to not leave the development of this nation to just politicians. We all have to come out to ensure that the change happens, because when the violence happens, the innocent people are going to be caught in the violence,” he warned.
His remarks come in the wake of violent incidents during last Friday’s rerun of parliamentary elections in the Ablekuma North Constituency, where disturbances disrupted voting and led to injuries.
Dr Asante urged civil society organisations, ordinary citizens, and all relevant stakeholders to work together to prevent electoral violence from becoming a permanent feature of Ghana’s political landscape.
He stressed that proactive, inclusive action is required to prevent future elections from spiralling out of control.
“If we don’t deal with this now, one day we may not be lucky. The violence could escalate and pose a real danger to our democratic stability,” he cautioned.
Dr Asante’s comments serve as a reminder that protecting the nation’s peace and democratic integrity is a shared responsibility.
