Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Foreign Affairs Minister, has arrived in Latvia for a two-day official visit focused on uncovering the truth behind the tragic death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia under what have been described as distressing and unclear circumstances.
In a Facebook post, the Minister disclosed that Latvia's Foreign Minister, Her Excellency Baiba Braže, has given firm assurances of full cooperation in the pursuit of truth and justice.
"As I promised Ghanaians, the main reason for requesting to pay this official visit is the distressing and unclear circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia," the Minister stated.
The Foreign Minister is leading a six-member delegation comprising senior directors from the Foreign Ministry, a forensic expert, and a pathologist to investigate the circumstances of the student's death.
However, two members of Nana Agyei's family who were invited to join the delegation could not travel on Saturday night due to visa processing delays.
The Minister confirmed that the family members' visas were issued on Sunday, and they are scheduled to travel Sunday night to join the delegation on Monday morning.
Addressing allegations circulating on social media, the Foreign Minister clarified that all family members and experts accompanying the delegation are being fully funded by the ministry.
"There has been no case of extortion or the issuance of fake tickets as has been alleged without any evidentiary basis whatsoever," the statement emphasised.
The delegation is expected to hold crucial meetings on Monday with the Latvian ministries of Interior and Education, as well as investigators handling the case.
The investigation is expected to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding Nana Agyei Ahyia's death and bring closure to his family.
