Kwasi Amoafo-Yeboah, who ran as an independent presidential candidate in the 2008 general elections, is waging an unflinching and strong campaign in defence of homosexuality in Ghana. “I support gay rights! I think every Ghanaian and indeed every human being deverves (sic) protection of their human rights,” the renowned businessman posted on his facebook wall. The topical issue of gay and lesbianism recently resurfaced when President John Mahama nominated human rights activist and now minister Nana Oye Lithur to head the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection. Many people, including clergy members, have spoken out against homosexuality, an act which is frowned upon by Ghana’s Constitution and customs. But Mr Amoafo-Yeboah, who is the Chairman I-tel Limited, thinks it is not right to treat people differently on the basis of their sexual orientations. Using his social relationships to back his stance, he averred, “I have had gay friends, human beings, die from AIDS in the 80's because they were afraid to come out and seek medical help for fear of persecution. “It makes no sense to me that in this day and age some of us would rather hunt down gay people while armed robbers and corrupt leaders go free.” Mr Amoafo-Yeboah therefore described homosexuality as “a victimless ‘crime’”, explaining that, “it is between consenting adults in the privacy of their bedrooms. Let's focus our energies on stuff that really hurt people.” He further advanced his argument by writing, “we are all God's children and we all deserve to be loved. I will disagree with any religious leader or indeed anybody who says homosexuals deserve to be cast out of society.” He also announced his preparedness to commit his resources, financial and otherwise, to promote gay rights in Ghana. “Any organization that wants to fight for gay rights will have my support, financially and otherwise,” he stated unequivocally. In addressing one of the numerous responses to his facebook post, he maintained that most people are fond of quoting the Holy Bible to “support inhumane acts. We do it very well. That's why there's no peace in this world.” Asked what he would do if his pretty daughter came home from college and introduced another lady to him as her husband, he replied: “I will not love her any less...And that's the truth.” Mr Amoafo-Yeboah is also calling for the repeal of criminal laws against homosexuality in the country so that gays can “exist freely without any fear of persecution, physical, economic or legal.”
