Police in South Africa have taken four individuals into custody following the fatal shooting of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete. The thirty-eight-year-old athlete was killed outside his residence in Mdantsane, located in the Eastern Cape province. Authorities confirmed that the ambush occurred on Thursday evening as Tete waited for his property gate to open. Two armed assailants wearing balaclavas emerged from another vehicle and opened fire on his car. A twenty-seven-year-old female passenger sustained serious gunshot wounds during the attack and remains hospitalised.

Law enforcement agencies moved swiftly over the weekend to apprehend four suspects ranging in age from twenty-two to twenty-eight. A twenty-two-year-old man arrested on Saturday faces initial charges of murder and attempted murder during his court appearance. Three additional suspects were arrested on Sunday, with two facing preliminary charges for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Investigators continue to review evidence to determine whether murder charges will apply to all detained individuals.

He captured the International Boxing Federation junior-bantamweight title in 2014 before claiming the World Boxing Organisation bantamweight crown three years later. The UK Anti-Doping Agency subsequently imposed a four-year suspension that concluded in late July. Manager Mla Tengimfene noted that Tete was actively preparing for a professional return to the ring. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie lamented the abrupt end to his athletic ambitions. "South Africa has lost one of the finest fighters it has ever produced," McKenzie stated. "He was training for a return to the ring. He believed he still had something to give this country. He was right, but he will not get the chance now. He, and all of us, have been robbed."
