Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, has criticised former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his handling of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, describing his approach as dismissive and indifferent.

In an interview with Channel One TV on Saturday, January 25, Mr Cudjoe argued that Akufo-Addo’s administration largely ignored the environmental devastation caused by galamsey, prioritising economic benefits over ecological and social responsibility.

“Akufo-Addo showed a nonchalant attitude towards the entire issue of galamsey. He failed to hold anyone accountable or address the problem with the urgency it required,” Mr Cudjoe stated.

He expressed frustration at the severe environmental damage inflicted on Ghana’s forests and water bodies, which he attributed to the government’s failure to take decisive action against illegal mining.

According to him, this inaction sent a troubling message about the lack of accountability and responsibility among the nation’s leaders.

“How can you allow such destruction to continue unchecked? Some even justified it as a means of supporting the Cedi, suggesting that without it, the currency could have depreciated to GH¢25 against the dollar. This was essentially turning a blind eye to ecological suicide,” Mr Cudjoe remarked.

He further criticised the lack of leadership and oversight, stating that the consequences of galamsey have left an enduring mark on the country’s natural resources and communities.

For Mr Cudjoe, the former president’s perceived indifference epitomised a broader failure in governance and environmental stewardship.
