The Ghana Education Service has promised to find schools for about 250 children with special needs who for lack of space were refused admission into the Garden City Special School in Kumasi.

The assurance by the GES comes just days after a Luv News report on the inability of the school - one OF its kind in the Ashanti Region capital - to accommodate students needing special attention.

Ashanti Region Coordinator of the GES, Debrah Gyasi, told Luv FM’s Prince Appiah that infrastructure development for schools for children with special needs in the region is a general problem.

“I will discuss with the headmistress [of Garden City Special School] to see if [she] can still push some [rejected students] here [another special school in the region] – those who are above the basic school going age”, he said.

He said the situation should be a wakeup call for government to prioritise education for children with special needs.

“This is another passionate appeal to government to prioritise building another school for the mentally handicapped”, he said.

He also called on corporate institutions to assist the region to improve the infrastructure situation of special school.

“If we only want to rely on government alone to furnish all special schools with the needed infrastructure then I think we will go nowhere”, he stated.

The Garden City Special School in the Ashanti Region recently turned away more than 250 children with special needs who require admission into the facility. The school said it has no space to admit the children.

Out of about 300 applicants for the 2015 admission season, only 30 representing about 10 percent were offered places.

Headmistress, Dr. Roselyn Frimpomaa Adjepong, fears until facilities are expanded, the educational needs of many children with special needs will not be fulfilled.

“This school serves the whole of Ashanti Region, Northern Region and even Eastern Region…so it’s high time GES look at all these things and help these children because once they are born into the system they need to be educated”, Dr Adjepong told Luv FM's Prince Appiah.
