In a bold move to revitalise Ghana Heavy Equipment Ltd (GHEL) and restore it to its former glory, the Acting CEO of GHEL, Mr Mutalib Awal, has engaged in high-level discussions with key executives from Kobelco Machinery, a leading global manufacturer of construction and mining equipment.
As part of Ghana’s broader “Big Push” agenda under the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy, Mr Awal met with Mr Kantaro (Kent) Nezaki, Managing Director for Kobelco Machinery, Middle East and Africa, and Mr Murat Derinbay, Deputy Managing Director for the region. The meeting focused on building strategic partnerships to promote environmentally sustainable and responsible mining and construction practices in Ghana and across Africa.
In his remarks, Mr Nezaki highlighted the long-standing friendship between Ghana and Japan, emphasising the shared commitment to environmental sustainability. He stressed that sustainable development is critical to preserving lives and natural resources and reaffirmed Kobelco’s dedication to supporting Ghana’s development goals.
“Ghana is the gateway to Africa and plays a vital role in shaping the continent’s future. At Kobelco, we are committed to providing machinery that supports sustainable and responsible mining. Our equipment comes equipped with robust tracking systems, and we are happy to share our KOMEX API technology with Ghanaian state agencies to enhance transparency and monitoring,” said Mr Nezaki.
Mr Mutalib Awal welcomed the initiative, stating that the government’s commitment to rebuilding the country must include cutting-edge technologies that enhance productivity and accountability in key sectors such as construction, agriculture, and mining.
“As we reposition the country under the 24-hour economy, it is imperative that all sectors embrace innovation. We welcome technologies that promote transparency, safety, and environmental responsibility,” Mr Awal added.
Also present was Mr Dharmesh Mashru, Managing Director of PL International Group, who has been instrumental in establishing the Kobelco brand in Ghana. He expressed his excitement about the growing partnership with GHEL.
“We are delighted to partner with Ghana Heavy Equipment Ltd on such a visionary and transformative initiative. Kobelco’s innovative technology will play a crucial role in supporting Ghana’s sustainable development goals,” Mr Mashru stated.
As part of this collaboration, GHEL will leverage its proprietary mobile platform, the Hello GHEL App, to offer leasing services and additional digital features. This move is designed to streamline access to equipment, improve service delivery, and increase transparency across operations.
The integration of the Hello GHEL App marks a significant step toward digital transformation in Ghana’s heavy equipment sector, offering users a seamless interface for equipment leasing, real-time tracking, and customer support.
This strategic collaboration signals a renewed era of innovation, accountability, and sustainability in Ghana’s infrastructure and extractive industries.
