The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has extended critical financial support to three young patients battling congenital heart conditions at the Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, as part of its ongoing pilot phase ahead of a nationwide rollout.
The intervention formed the third stop of the Fund’s engagements for the day under the 50 pilot cases being undertaken to test systems and processes.
At the visit, the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, presented a cheque of GH₵447,000 to support the treatment of the three children aged one year eight months, one year three months, and four years.

The children are all receiving care for congenital heart defects, commonly referred to as holes in the heart.
Ms Darko-Opoku said the pilot cases are designed to ensure the Fund is fully prepared to deliver timely and dignified support once operations are officially rolled out.
“These critical pilot cases will help us ensure a smooth and successful take-off, so that when we roll out fully, help reaches patients swiftly, seamlessly and with dignity,” she noted.
The donation was received with excitement by the Chief Executive Officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, and members of the hospital’s senior management team.
Dr Adam expressed appreciation to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for the timely intervention, describing it as a major relief to the affected families and a boost to the hospital’s efforts to provide specialised care.
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund reiterated its commitment to supporting patients with critical health needs across the country, particularly vulnerable groups who face financial barriers to life-saving treatment.
The Fund said lessons from the pilot phase will inform its full implementation, ensuring that support is delivered efficiently and compassionately to those who need it most.
