Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu says government must make public how much it lost in its failed pursuit of the controversial STX project. He said it is only when figures are brought forward that Parliament will know what next line of action to take. Speaking to Joy News’ Evans Mensah, the Minority leader also stated the public needs to know who ordered the pursuit of a “golden fleece” which was bound to fail. He was responding to government’s latest decision to go after officials of STX Korea who have failed in honoring the promise of building 30,000 housing units for security personnel in Ghana. Works and Housing Minister ET Mensah had in a press conference, Wednesday vowed to chase officials of STX Korea to retrieve every investment made. He said the Attorney General has been directed to thoroughly look into the contract signed with STX and advice accordingly. Whilst agreeing with the sector minister over the new decision, he was quick to point out that the country would not have gotten to this stage if the government had listened to wise counsel from the opposition and other civil society groups. He said even though the opposition in Parliament boycotted the process at some point, the final decision to accept STX was taken in the name of Parliament and duly accented by the president. He said Parliament is ready to remedy the situation but the government must be forthcoming with how much it had invested in this fiasco. Osei Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu averred however that if government is actually interested in retrieving monies from the people it should begin to look into the judgement debts paid to people who are not deserving of it. Meanwhile, one of the critics of the STX project IMANI Ghana has welcomed the decision by the government to recover its investment. Its Vice President Kofi Bentil told Joy News there must be full accounting by government which should be put before Parliament in order for the law makers to chart a course of retrieving monies invested into STX.
