Ghana National Association of Private Schools has revealed that it has appealed for financial support to aid its members who haven’t been paid due to the closure of schools.
According to Theophilus Quaye, the Greater Accra Region Chairman of the organisation, they have signalled the presidency for a part of the ¢600 million made available for Small and Medium Enterprises.
“We have appealed to the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, through the Minister of Education to come to the aid of our schools in these hard times."
He admitted that they haven’t received any response yet, however, they are exploring other sources of funds.
“We heard that government was giving a stimulus package to small and medium and medium scale industries and we have been in touch with them.
"The information we’ve had from them is that they are now working out the criteria on who qualifies or not,” he told the host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Daniel Dadzie.
On March 15, President Nana Akufo-Addo ordered the closure of all schools and universities in Ghana as his administration moves to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
This new directive forced a number of institutions to migrate teaching and learning activities to various online platforms.
Mr Quaye has revealed that due to the abrupt closure of educational institutions the salary payments of members have not been paid.
“Our main source of income is school fees and once children have gone home, parents are not working as at now so nobody will come to pay school fees,” he said.
GNAPS which was introduced in the early 70s now has thousands of private schools ranging from Kindergarten to Senior High Schools under its umbrella.
The Chairman said private schools contribute a lot to government’s efforts to educate the masses hence the need to support them.
