Ghana has since 2003,recorded no child death from measles after the introduction of immunization against the six childhood killer diseases.
The total number of children who contract measles has also reduced drastically.
The Deputy Public Health Director, Dr. Edward Antwi said even though the spate of the disease has reduced, the outbreak continues to occur mostly in children under 5 years in some parts of the country.
He noted that in order to control the disease, over ninety per cent of the children need to be vaccinated through the regular immunization exercise.
Dr. Antwi said this at the Greater Accra stakeholders briefing on the 2010 measles vaccination campaign under the theme "measles can kill, immunize your child now in Accra."
Speaking in an interview with Asempa News, Dr. Edward Antwi emphasized that measles is a dangerous disease which can be transmitted from person to person when droplets containing the virus discharged from a patient’s mouth or nose are inhaled by another person.
