The Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), under the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has completed the second phase of its nationwide practical training for caterers and head cooks, as part of efforts to improve the quality of meals served to school children.
The month-long exercise, held in February 2026, saw teams from the GSFP Secretariat engage caterers and head cooks across 13 regions.

This follows an earlier phase conducted in December 2025, which covered the Bono, Volta and Oti regions.
The training forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen the implementation of the programme by equipping caterers with modern cooking techniques and safe food handling practices, ensuring that meals provided to pupils are both nutritious and safe for consumption.

Beyond improving food preparation standards, the initiative also seeks to enhance the nutritional value of meals while promoting the use of locally sourced food items to support local agriculture.
Participants were taken through hands-on sessions on portion control using practical measurement methods, the effective use of soya beans as a cost-effective and nutritious protein source, as well as food hygiene, safety standards and proper kitchen management.

The GSFP has maintained that continuous capacity-building for caterers remains critical to achieving its objective of providing healthy meals to school children across the country.

The programme also continues to collaborate with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Education Service and the Women in Agricultural Development Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, to ensure the delivery of safe, nutritious meals to beneficiary pupils nationwide.
