The Minister for Works and Housing, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has disclosed that Ghana is facing a housing deficit of more than 1.8 million units, with affordability remaining a major barrier for many low- and middle-income earners seeking decent accommodation.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Mr Adjei said rapid urbanisation continues to place significant pressure on housing delivery, particularly in major cities such as Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi.
“More than half of our population now lives in urban areas, and projections indicate this could rise to over 72 per cent by 2050, further increasing demand for decent housing,” he explained.
He noted that the inadequate housing supply has contributed to overcrowding, rising property prices and the expansion of informal settlements across urban centres.
“Urgent and coordinated interventions are needed to boost housing supply while ensuring affordability, alongside sustainable urban planning that matches Ghana’s evolving demographic trends,” Mr Adjei emphasised.
