The Ministry of Health has handed over the case of alleged misconduct at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Attorney General's Department for further investigations.
In a statement issued by the Ministry, Minister of Health, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, directed that the conduct of some officials involved in the case be reported to these bodies following the conclusion of an internal investigation by the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
The GHS investigation found that the hospital staff responsible for the patient’s evacuation to Ojobi, where she was later abandoned until her death, had not acted "appropriately."
"The Ghana Health Service's committee concluded that the employees identified in the incident contributed to the inappropriate planning and evacuation of the patient, leading to her unfortunate death did not act appropriately," the statement revealed.
Based on the severity of the issue, involving loss of life, the Ministry has called for further investigation by the Attorney General's office although the committee from the GHS recommended that the implicated staff be sanctioned through internal disciplinary procedures.
The Minister of Health has formally requested the Attorney General to investigate the culpability or otherwise of the implicated staff "and take any further action deemed appropriate."
The Ministry also confirmed that the matter has been reported to the CID for criminal investigation.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest standards of healthcare delivery, promising to prevent the recurrence of such tragic incidents in the future.
