The Ministry of Health has confirmed the disbursement of GH₵462 million to support the training allowances of 120,000 nursing students nationwide.
The payment, covering a six-month period, fulfills a key campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama and underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering the health sector.
In a press release issued on Thursday, July 17, the Ministry stated that the initiative is part of a broader effort to provide financial support to students in Nursing Training Colleges.
“The allowance was a key commitment made by President Mahama during the recent electioneering campaign and has now been fulfilled,” the release noted. Payments began yesterday and are expected to continue through next Friday.
The Ministry described the move as a critical intervention to hoenhance the welfare of nursing trainees and motivate future health professionals.
“This development is a significant step in improving the welfare of nursing trainees and sustaining the motivation of future health professionals. It further aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen the health sector by ensuring that critical human resources receive the needed support throughout their training,” the statement read.
The Ministry also expressed gratitude to President Mahama and other stakeholders for ensuring the timely release and distribution of the funds.
“The Ministry extends its appreciation to the president of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, for fulfilling his promise to the nurses, as well as all other stakeholders involved in facilitating the timely release and distribution of the funds.”
Reiterating its dedication to healthcare education, the Ministry pledged to collaborate closely with nursing institutions to maintain the delivery of quality training across the country.
The disbursement comes as a relief to nursing trainees who have long advocated for consistent financial support during their training.
With this development, the government aims to address challenges in the health sector while encouraging more students to pursue careers in nursing.
