Minister for Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has reiterated government’s commitment to increase investments in the power sector to ensure stable electricity supply.
Parts of the country have in recent times been hit with power cuts due to obsolete equipment at major sub-stations across the country.
Speaking at a ceremony to inaugurate the 33KV Ellen Moran Primary Substation in Kanda in the Greater Accra region, Dr. Opoku Prempeh in a speech read on his behalf, said government is embarking on a massive investment in the power sector to ensure sustainable electricity supply.
“Next week, on 1st June, 2022, the Vice President [Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia] will be commissioning the Kasoa BSP, a 435 MWA Capacity Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation, the second largest bulk supply point in Ghana,” he said.
Dr. Prempeh announced that the project will address low voltage and frequent power outage challenges caused by increasing domestic and industrial demand in Kasoa and its environs, including Senya Bereku, Bawjiase and Nyanyanu.
He added that the Tema to Accra transmission line upgrade project to accommodate an increase from 161KV capacity to 330KV capacity is also ongoing.
“Further, the national transmission backbone under construction from the coast to Bolgatanga had a gap between Kumasi and Kintampo as outstanding works, which have since been completed”
Citing some of the investments made in the power sector, Dr. Prempeh recalled that in October 2021, President Akufo-Addo inaugurated the Pokuase BSP, funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), in the context of the Power Compact to the tune of USD47 million, with a total capacity of 580MVA which happens to be the largest BSP in Ghana.
“Constructed under the existing 330kV Aboadze-Volta-Lomé Transmission line which passes through Pokuase, the BSP is the first 330kV Bulk Supply Point in the capital and the most technologically advanced substation in Ghana,” he said.
