The President of the Ghana Music Alliance, Seven Xavier, has appealed to the government to invest in record labels in Ghana.
Citing the South Korean government’s contribution to the growth of the K-pop genre, he said this could be a way of elevating the standards of record labels and music production in Ghana.
He made the admonition during his presentation on Joy FM’s CREATIVE INDUSTRY MANIFESTO series, on Showbiz A-Z on Saturday.
"When you come to record labels, most of them are not even resourced and financed enough to be called record labels in Ghana. We probably call them production companies because the don't have the departments needed to be called record labels.
We can maybe look at the Korean model where the government resourced about three huge record labels, and basically gave them millions every and produce what we now call K pop artistes who have taken over the whole world," he told the host Kwame Dadzie.
He suggested that Ghana may decide to use a model close to the South Korea's and resource about three or so labels.
"We probably take one from the north, one from the middle belt and one from the north," he noted.
Apart from that, Seven charged the policy makers to make music theory compulsory at the basic school level. He said this will help give people who have interest in music the foundation to proper music education.
He further noted that Music Business courses should be introduced into the various tertiary institutions for first and second degree levels. According to him, this will strengthen the professionalism in the Ghana music industry.
Touching on the need to have a multi-purpose performance arena, he cited Kigali and Lagos arenas as facilities helping the entertainment sectors of these countries.
The President of the Ghana Music Alliance also stated that judging from the abysmal performances of the three collective management organisations: Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), Audiovisual Rights Society of Ghana (ARSOG) and CopyGhana, other CMOs should be allowed to operate to give better services to the creatives.
The CREATIVE INDUSTRY MANIFESTO is a series on Joy FMs' 'Showbiz A-Z that brings together stakeholders of the creative industry to proffer ideas on their various fields to the political parties as they prepare to launch their various manifestos.
